Santiago Sandoval Set to Lead Chivas Against Cruz Azul
Santiago Sandoval is set to lead Chivas against Cruz Azul in the semifinal first leg at the Estadio Azteca on Wednesday at 20:00 hours. The 18-year-old is expected to carry the attack at a time when Chivas arrives with five players absent on national-team duty.
Sandoval’s rise at Chivas
Born in Boca del Río, Veracruz, on 7 August 2007, Sandoval came through Chivas’ youth system from the Sub-14 level and made his first-division debut on 27 July 2025 against León. He plays mainly as a mediapunta under Gabriel Milito, and the club has moved quickly to put him in the middle of a semifinal that leaves little margin for error.
That role has been earned on the pitch. On 9 May, he scored a double against Tigres to help Chivas reach the semifinals, and that performance is part of why he now sits at the center of the team’s attack instead of waiting for a longer runway.
Alonso Luis Sandoval’s view
The family story around him has followed the same path.
Analysts say Santiago inherited his father’s vision of play and ability to unsettle opponents, but the immediate issue is simpler: Chivas needs him now. With five absences tied to national teams, Milito is leaning on one of the club’s youngest attacking options in a semifinal against a Cruz Azul side renewed under Joel Huiqui and boosted by Christian Ebere’s form.
Cruz Azul at Estadio Azteca
The matchup gives Sandoval a direct test against one of the tournament’s sharpest stages. Chivas already cleared Tigres to reach the semifinal, and this first leg at the Estadio Azteca puts the 18-year-old in a role that asks for production, not promise. If he keeps the same edge he showed against Tigres, Chivas can carry a live threat into the second leg.
