AFL Fixture Puts Sydney, Geelong on Primetime Run — Afl Fixture

The AFL fixture for rounds 16 to 22 landed on Thursday, and the first Friday night Western Derby in more than two decades is in it. Sydney and Geelong each get four Thursday or Friday night games, while Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Richmond miss out on those slots.

Western Derby Returns to Friday Night

Round 20 carries the most striking change. Fremantle will host West Coast in a Friday night derby that starts 30 minutes after Melbourne’s game against Geelong at the MCG, making it just the second Friday night derby ever between the Dockers and Eagles and the first since 2005.

That gives the western rivalry a prime-time stage it has not had in more than two decades. The same round also puts the second Sydney derby of the year on a 4.35pm Saturday start, while two Saturday twilight double headers sit in rounds 20 and 22.

Showdown, Swans and West Coast

June 27, in round 16, brings the Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide into a standalone Saturday night slot. The same fixture block also gives the Swans their Pride Game against the Western Bulldogs at the SCG in round 17.

West Coast is spread across both Friday night double-headers and finishes with two blockbuster games, the same total as Hawthorn. The Eagles also host Adelaide in Perth in round 17, leaving them central to the league’s most visible windows across the middle of the season.

Carlton and Essendon Miss Out

Carlton and Essendon had a combined seven Thursday or Friday night games in rounds 16 to 22 last year, but this time neither club lands a place in those blockbuster slots. Together they have just two wins so far in 2026, and both clubs sit outside the league’s most exposed time windows for the rest of this fixture block.

The AFL had already released the full 24-round fixture in November last year, but only dates and timings through round 15 were known until now. Rounds 23 and 24 stay floating, with details to come closer to those weeks, while rounds 16 to 19 also fall during school holidays as Kids Footy Month, when children aged 14 years old and under can access free general admission tickets.
