Jeremy Jacquet Liverpool Transfer: £55million deal follows Rennes farewell
Jeremy Jacquet Liverpool transfer moved one step closer after the 20-year-old bade farewell to Rennes following a season that left the club in position to chase European football. Liverpool agreed a pre-contract earlier this year worth an initial £55million plus £5m in add-ons, and the centre-back will join after the season ends.
Jacquet leaves Roazhon
Jacquet marked the end of his Rennes stay with a personalised farewell gift during the club’s final home match, a 2-1 win over Paris FC. He then posted a video on Instagram with the line: “A wonderful last evening at Roazhon.”
That message fitted the timing of his exit. He made his last appearance for Rennes at the start of February and has missed the club’s last 11 Ligue 1 matches while recovering from shoulder surgery. He is also expected to sit out Sunday’s final game away at Marseille.
Liverpool land a young centre-back
The move had already been framed as a major coup for Liverpool when the agreement was struck earlier in the year. Chelsea were among the clubs beaten off for Jacquet, who had already been lined up as part of Liverpool’s defensive rebuild.
Arne Slot now gets a defender who has spent the closing months of the season away from match action but still arrives with a price tag that reflects the club’s view of him. At 20, Jacquet is joining after a pre-contract that ties Liverpool to a sizeable outlay before he has even played a minute for them.
Rennes chase fifth place
Rennes were fifth in Ligue 1 as Jacquet said goodbye, and that position still carried a route into next season’s Europa League. They can secure fifth place by avoiding defeat against sixth-placed Marseille on the final day.
That leaves his farewell tied to more than one club’s plans. Rennes are trying to finish the job without slipping, while Liverpool wait for a player they have already paid to bring in once the season ends. Virgil van Dijk is entering the final year of his contract, and Ibrahima Konate has not yet agreed a new deal, which gives Jacquet’s arrival a clear place in the squad picture.
