Ovechkin to Defend 145-Page Dissertation After Hockey Career

Alex Ovechkin is expected to defend a 145-page dissertation after his playing career ends, then pursue a PhD in Pedagogical Sciences. The Washington Capitals captain has been tied to the degree path since 2015, and he moved one step closer in 2021.

Viktor Gorsky on Ovechkin

Professor Viktor Gorsky said Ovechkin put off the defense until retirement. He described the work as serious and said the pre-defense went smoothly. "It’s serious work, after all. And Alexander is truly studying, not just for show. But, frankly, Sasha already had everything ready, and it didn’t require much effort. He just needed to find the time. Ovechkin handled his pre-defense very well. He answered all the questions and didn’t fail any of them. And besides, he’s into hockey; he lives his life."

Russia And The NHL

The dissertation is titled "Organization of the technical and tactical training process in professional hockey clubs of Russia and the National Hockey League." It looks at how those systems train players and how their priorities differ when developing young athletes.

Gorsky said the study found young players can learn Russian and North American tactical styles at the same time and still improve. The dissertation says Russian hockey tends to emphasize puck possession and technical skill, while North American hockey leans toward a quicker pace and more physical play.

What The Study Leaves Behind

The work was not just abstract theory. The idea of mixing Russian and North American teaching styles was tested by one of CSKA Moscow's youth teams over a full season. That gives Ovechkin's dissertation a practical edge as he prepares for a post-playing academic path.

When his career ends, the next step is the defense itself, followed by the PhD pursuit in Pedagogical Sciences. For a player still known first for his scoring touch, the academic route now sits alongside the hockey legacy already in place.
