Derbyshire Police closes A52 Pentagon Island for over four hours

Derbyshire Police closed several roads in Derby city centre on Friday morning, May 15, after a police incident shut the A52 Pentagon Island, Derwent Street and Exeter Street for more than four hours. The closures hit morning rush hour and forced drivers onto other city routes while police dealt with the incident.

Derby city centre roads

Queues built on routes via the A6 and A52 while police told drivers to avoid the area. For people trying to cross the city centre, that meant the main roads around Smithfield and Meadow Road were cut off at the same time.

Derbyshire Police said just after 9am on May 15 that the incident was a concern for a man’s safety. Police later said the concern for a man’s safety was resolved and the roads were reopened.

Trentbarton services were caught in the closure because buses were unable to leave the Meadow Road depot while the roads were shut. The company said The Villager, Xprss38, Harlequin, The Allestree, The Mickleover, V3 and The Comet could not run.

For passengers who rely on those routes, the interruption was not just a delay on one road but a full suspension of several services at the same time. Once the roads reopened, traffic began returning to normal.
