Martone, Grundstrom, Berglund Head to World Championship Hockey 2026

Three Philadelphia Flyers are headed to world championship hockey 2026. Porter Martone will play for Canada, while Carl Grundstrom and Jack Berglund were named to Sweden’s roster for the tournament in Switzerland.

The 2026 IIHF World Championship runs from May 15–31 in Zurich and Fribourg. For the Flyers, it sends three forwards into the same international event, with Martone already carrying an eighth career nod for Canada.

Martone’s Canada Run Continues

Martone will represent Canada for the eighth time in his career. He has already skated for Canada at two World Junior Championships in 2026 and 2025, one World Championship in 2025, two World Under-18 Championships in 2024 and 2023, one Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2024, and one Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in 2023.

His rise has moved quickly. Martone signed his entry-level contract with the Flyers on March 29 after his collegiate season at Michigan State University, where he led the team with 25 goals and 50 points as a freshman. In nine regular-season games with Philadelphia, he posted 10 points with four goals and six assists, then added two goals and three assists in 10 playoff games.

Sweden Adds Grundstrom, Berglund

Grundstrom is one of 14 forwards on Sweden’s roster and will play in the World Championship for the fourth time. He has appeared at the tournament four times already, has seven points with five goals and two assists in 23 games, and helped Sweden win bronze in 2024. During the 2025-26 season, he played 47 games and finished with 13 points, nine goals, four assists and a career-high plus/minus of +7.

Berglund will play in his fourth IIHF tournament with Sweden and represent the country for the fifth time overall. He captained Sweden to the 2026 World Junior Championship gold medal, tied for the team lead with 10 points in seven games, and led that event with a +9 rating. After completing his first full season in the Swedish Hockey League, he signed a three-year entry level contract with the Flyers in March and recorded 12 points with seven goals and five assists for Farjestad BK this season.

Sweden’s roster and Canada’s selection give Philadelphia three players on the same world stage at once, with Zurich and Fribourg set to host them from May 15–31. That leaves the Flyers with a clear international footprint and three forwards arriving at different points in their careers, each carrying recent production into the tournament.
