Gérard Bruneau says Saint-maurice mourns child under two
A child under two died after an accident at a home in saint-maurice on Thursday. The death left the family, loved ones and the town of 3,400 in mourning, while police opened an inquiry into the case.
Mayor Gérard Bruneau said the first thoughts in Saint-Maurice were with the parents and relatives. He added: "En ce moment, nos premières pensées accompagnent les parents, la famille et les proches entourant cet événement d'une grande tristesse".
Saint-Maurice mourning
The response spread quickly beyond the home. The administrator of the Ligue de balle-donnée Saint-Louis-de-France wrote on the league page: "Il n’est pas normal de perdre un enfant, je peux exprimer la souffrance et la douleur ressenties pour les parents et les grands-parents. En espérant pouvoir remonter de cette épreuve".
More than 200 sympathy comments followed that message. The local baseball community also moved to cancel Thursday evening games, and the league founder stopped all of the night's activities because of what he described as a major tragedy affecting his family.
Sûreté du Québec inquiry
The Sûreté du Québec's major crimes unit is handling the investigation because a child under six died. Police said the criminal theory appeared to be ruled out at first glance, which leaves the inquiry focused on the circumstances of the accident rather than an obvious criminal track.
For Saint-Maurice, the immediate next step is not a public event but the police review now underway. The town's reaction has already spread through the league and the mayor's office, and the scale of the response shows how quickly a local tragedy can reach well beyond one home.
