Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds leads The Mountain Goats' Days

charlie sheen gets a title credit on The Mountain Goats’ new album Days, which the band announced with “Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds” as the lead track. The release arrives as a swift follow-up to Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, which the band put out last November.

John Darnielle said in a press release that Days started life as Grunges, a sequel to the 2017 LP Goths, after he made a joke on social media about writing a song called “Contemplating Pearl Jam in the Carolina Dawn.” He also said the songs are loosely about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, giving the record a frame that looks backward without turning into simple nostalgia.

John Congleton at Sear Sound

John Congleton produced Days and recorded the band at Sear Sound in Manhattan. Darnielle is joined by Matt Douglas and Jon Wurster, while Peter Hughes left the band in 2024 after 30 years. That lineup shift leaves the new record carrying a different band shape than the one that made earlier Mountain Goats albums.

Days also includes “Best Hard Rock Albums 2013” and “Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums,” and additional players on the record include Rob Jost, Mikaela Davis, and assorted backing vocalists. Those names signal a broader studio build than a bare trio, which fits a release built around specific lyrical punch lines and an unusual lead title.

Silver Spring on 05-15

The Mountain Goats’ listed tour dates begin on 05-15 in Silver Spring, MD, at The Fillmore Silver Spring. For listeners, the practical takeaway is simple: the band has moved from a last-November album cycle into a new one quickly, with Days now defined by its title track, its tracklist, and the production team around it.

Darnielle’s own framing is blunt enough to set expectations. “Most songs here are in major keys but don’t let that fool you.” “Still, you shouldn’t let that deter you.”
