North Berwick tops Scotland seaside towns ahead of Tobermory
North Berwick was crowned Scotland's best seaside town in a UK-wide roundup, with tobermory among the other Scottish coastal places mentioned in the ranking. The result gives the East Lothian town a higher profile for day-trippers and visitors planning rail-linked coastal trips from Edinburgh.
The roundup, reported by the Daily Record, placed North Berwick first and described it as a wonderful coastal retreat. Holiday Cars said it is a 30-minute train journey from Edinburgh, putting it within straightforward reach for people heading out from Edinburgh Waverley.
North Berwick and Bass Rock
The ranking pointed to Bass Rock just offshore, where one of the world's largest gannet colonies lives. That colony has more than 150,000 birds, and the town also has two sandy beaches, West Beach and East Beach, inside the town itself.
Holiday Cars also said North Berwick feels like an extension of Edinburgh by the sea, with independent shops, artisanal cafés, and seafood described as ultra fresh. The company added that the town hosts The Fringe by the Sea alongside the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, while the beaches are worth visiting at any time.
Edinburgh Waverley links
For visitors, the practical draw is the rail link. Edinburgh Waverley has straightforward train connections to North Berwick, and the town was described as one of the best and most accessible day trips from Edinburgh.
That puts North Berwick in a stronger position than other Scottish seaside names in the roundup, including Oban, Tobermory and Ullapool. Nearby attractions such as the Renaissance Club, which hosts the Scottish Open, and Tantallon Castle, only a few miles away, add to the town's pull without requiring a long drive.
