Radville Gusts Hit 115 km/h as Red Deer Weather Disrupts Saskatchewan

Red deer weather hit southern Saskatchewan hard on Friday, with gusts reaching 115 km/h in Radville and power outages spreading across Regina and other communities. The wind toppled semi-trucks, brought down trees and forced crews to work through active outages while some repairs paused for safety.

Radville And Regina Wind Damage

The strongest reading came from the RM of Laurier, where Radville saw gusts up to 115 km/h. Peter Quinlan said damage typically starts when winds move faster than 90 km/h, and this storm cleared that mark by a wide margin.

Across the south, tipped tractor trailers and semis were reported near Belle Plaine, at an intersection north of Regina, and on Highway One west of Webb. Police also reported a two-vehicle collision involving a semi south of Highway One near Moose Jaw.

SaskPower Crews On Site

SaskPower said crews were at all the active unplanned power cuts Friday morning. Some crews were already working on repairs, while others were arriving at the scene and deciding their next steps.

Joel Cherry called the storm an extreme and unusual event. He also warned that high winds make power lines especially vulnerable when trees come down on them or the lines are forced down directly.

Consul Power And Safety

Travis Seifert said his power in Consul was knocked out on Wednesday and restored Thursday night. He described seeing the dust storm from his truck, saying, “All of a sudden, the town got quite dark. It was a little scary — you couldn’t see where you were driving or anything like that, so you pretty much had to stop and wait it out.”

Weyburn West crews retired for the night around 12:25 a.m. on Friday because of safety concerns and high winds. People without power or a generator were told to keep a flashlight with batteries ready, while anyone using a generator was told not to run it indoors because of carbon monoxide risk.
