Munster Vs Lions: McMillan Eyes Result At Thomond Park
Munster vs Lions at Thomond Park on Saturday evening is the final-round match that will decide whether Munster reach the knock-out stages of the United Rugby Championship. Clayton McMillan’s side need a result, and the pressure is sharpened by a season that drifted after a strong start.
McMillan on Munster's task
“We’ve put ourselves in this position and we’re the only ones that can fight our way through to a solution,” McMillan said during the week. He added: “But we can’t put our attention on what might be. We just have to focus on the performances directly in front of us.”
That focus has to hold under the sort of pressure Munster created for themselves. After beating Leinster 31-14 at Croke Park and then Connacht at Thomond Park, they won only five of their next 12 URC games, and they also went out of both European competitions without really firing a shot.
Thomond Park and the retiring duo
There is a second layer to the night at Thomond Park. Hooker Niall Scannell and tighthead John Ryan are retiring, and both will run out there for the final time.
The pair have 466 Munster appearances between them, which puts their farewell inside a match that already carries qualification weight. Craig Casey will captain the side, with Munster’s starting XV also including Mike Haley, Alex Smith, Alex Nankivell, Dan Kelly, Shayne O'Brien, Jack Crowley, Jeremy Loughman, Thomas Ahern, Fineen Wycherley, John O'Donoghue, John Hodnett and Bavin Gleeson.
Munster and the Lions record
Munster won their last three meetings with the Lions after losing the first clash with the Johannesburg side. Their last victory in this run against South African opponents was the 17-10 win over the Lions at Thomond Park in November 2024.
The Lions arrive with Quan Horn, Kobus Mpeku, Henco van Wyk, Rikus Kriel, Angelo Davids, Chris Smith, Morne van den Berg, SJ Kotze, PJ Botha, Sibusiso Lombard, Renzo Nothnagel, Darrien Landsberg, Sibusiso Mahashe, Bathobele Hlekani and Francke Horn in their starting XV. Munster have been better in this fixture than in the wider South African run, and Saturday’s result now decides whether that form still carries into the knock-out rounds.
