Cardiff Council approves 177 homes in Plasdŵr Housing Estate
Cardiff Council has approved detailed proposals for 177 new homes in the latest phase of the Plasdŵr housing estate in north west Cardiff. The homes will go up on land off Pentrebane Drive and north of St Fagans Road.
The scheme sits inside a £2 billion development expected to deliver around 7,000 homes over the next two decades. Plasdŵr covers 900 acres of previously greenfield land between St Fagans, Radyr, Morganstown and Fairwater.
Plasdŵr and Pendown
Planning documents describe the wider vision for the area as a new neighbourhood known as Pendown. Developers say the project is intended to reflect a green, garden city inspired character while providing a combination of town and country living.
The wider masterplan includes five separate neighbourhoods, four new primary schools, a secondary school and a district centre with shops, cafes, bars and healthcare services. It also includes improved public transport links, new cycle routes and upgraded bus infrastructure connecting the area to the rest of Cardiff.
Homes Off Pentrebane Drive
The approved section will include terraced homes, semi-detached and detached properties, and walk-up flats. Most of the homes are planned to be two-storey or two-and-a-half-storey buildings.
Planning documents also say the streets are designed with low traffic speeds and, where possible, shared surfaces, attractive street trees and landscaping. Each property will include parking and cycle storage facilities.
Greenfield Land in Cardiff
Developers described the existing site as mainly grassland, hedgerows and a small area of woodland. Around 40% of the Plasdŵr site is earmarked for green space, including parks, woodlands and playing fields, while up to 30% of the homes across the overall development are expected to be affordable housing.
For residents watching the project, the approval moves the scheme a step further from plan to construction. It adds 177 more homes to a development that has been promoted as Cardiff’s garden city for the 21st Century.
