Hannah Aberegg shot dead by police in South Bend at 25

Hannah Aberegg, the Girls Incarcerated star, died at 25 after police shot her in South Bend, Indiana, on 6 May 2026. The incident began with a welfare check and ended in a stand-off at a petrol station, leaving Indiana State Police to sort out what happened next.

Police said Aberegg’s mother had asked for the check because she was experiencing a medical episode. When officers arrived, Ted Bohner said Aberegg was armed and pulled out a handgun during the interaction, and a South Bend officer fired.

South Bend police and St Joseph County police initially attended the scene. After the fatal shooting, Indiana State Police arrived and took over the investigation, which Bohner said usually takes several weeks to complete. He added, “The Indiana State Police continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting that took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 6, 2026.”

“These investigations typically take several weeks to complete,” Bohner said. “While this may seem like a long time, it is needed to do a thorough and accurate investigation.” He also said, “Our role in this incident is to seek facts through all means necessary.”

Bohner said, “We do not make determinations on these incidents. That is the role for the Prosecutor's Office.” He also said, “Some facts that some in the community either overlooked or ignored; Ms Aberegg was armed at the time of this incident and did pull this handgun out during interaction with the police, causing an officer with the SBPD to fire his weapon.”

The obituary says Hannah Annette Aberegg, born July 2, 2000, was the devoted mother of two children, Kai’son Aberegg and Ari’Ella Thompson-Aberegg, and the cherished daughter of William Aberegg Sr. and Heather Trobaugh. She was 18 when she appeared on the Netflix docuseries, which puts the fatal shooting in the middle of a family loss as investigators work through the officer-involved case.

For the family, the practical reality is now smaller and harsher than any public debate around the shooting: two children named in the obituary are left without their mother, while the state’s review proceeds over the coming weeks. That is the only timeline that matters here.
