Brian O’Nora Out Indefinitely After Cubs Sox Concussion
Brian O’Nora is out indefinitely after suffering a concussion in the cubs sox game Saturday night at Rate Field. He was hit on the left side of the jaw by a Jarred Kelenic foul ball in the fourth inning, then left after being examined by Sox trainers.
The White Sox won the game 8-3, but the more immediate change came behind the plate. Erich Bacchus took over after O’Nora was removed, and the game finished with a three-man crew.
O’Nora’s jaw hit
O’Nora said Sunday morning that the foul ball dropped him to a knee. He said it was the hardest shot he had taken in the face in 34 years of umpiring.
He also said he did not remember anything until he got up. The left side of his jaw was sore, and he had bad headaches after the inning ended.
Bacchus and Bacon
Once O’Nora left, Bacchus handled the plate the rest of the way. Triple-A umpire John Bacon joined the crew for Sunday’s game as a designated call-up umpire, giving the group another working official after the injury forced the Saturday-night change.
O’Nora planned to go home later Sunday and then fly to Arizona for treatment at the Sports Concussion Center at Banner-University Phoenix. He said he would not return to the field until he is cleared, leaving the crew to work without one of its regular major league umpires for the foreseeable future.
