Barry George denies 1987 rape allegations at Southwark Crown Court
Barry George denied raping a 14-year-old girl in 1987 when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday. The 66-year-old entered not guilty pleas to one count of rape, two counts of indecent assault and an alternative offence of attempted rape.

Judge Alexander Milne KC granted George bail after the pleas were entered. The allegations concern incidents said to have taken place in the Hammersmith and Fulham area of west London between September 6 and 12, 1987.
Jill Dando case
George’s name is already tied to the killing of Jill Dando, who was shot dead outside her home in Fulham, west London, on April 26, 1999. He was arrested on suspicion of murder in 2000, convicted in 2001, had that conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal in November 2007 and was cleared by a jury in August 2008 after a retrial.

No-one has been convicted of Dando’s killing. The rape case now moves forward from Monday’s pleas with George on bail, while the allegations date to almost four decades before the court hearing.
