Iraola Eyes Europe as Bournemouth Reach Man City News Stage

Andoni Iraola says finishing in a European place would be the best way to end his time at Bournemouth, and man city news now arrives with the club one point from making that happen. Bournemouth sit sixth with two Premier League games left and are already in a Europa League spot.

Iraola and Bournemouth

"It would be the best way to finish these amazing three seasons," Iraola said of ending his Bournemouth spell in Europe. He will leave in the summer when his contract expires, after three seasons in charge.

He also said, "Especially this year, it has been really challenging for me as a coach because we've changed the team a lot and we've changed, not completely our style, but it's a different type of football comparing to last season."

Sixth Place Pressure

Bournemouth are four points off a Champions League place and could still finish in the Conference League. Sixth may even be enough for Champions League qualification if Aston Villa beat Freiburg in the Europa League final and finish fifth, which leaves Bournemouth's route to Europe tied to more than one table position.

That is the complication inside the run-in. Bournemouth have never played in European competition in their 127-year history, so one point from their last two games would secure that first step into Europe even if the exact competition is still being sorted out.

Forest and City

The next two matches carry the pressure. Manchester City visit Bournemouth on Tuesday at 19:30 BST, and Bournemouth then go to Nottingham Forest on Sunday at 16:00 BST.

Bournemouth's form keeps the door open. They are on a 16-match unbeaten run in the top flight, with their last defeat coming against Arsenal on 3 January, and they have not been beaten since selling Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in the January transfer window.

"We are really close, but there is a big difference between being really close and getting it and grabbing it," Iraola said. That is the edge of the story now: Bournemouth need one point, and the manager who arrived in 2023 to replace Gary O'Neil wants Europe to be the last line of his three-season stay.
