Stuart Bell named sole finalist for UF president by committee
stuart bell was unanimously recommended by the University of Florida Presidential Search Advisory Committee as the sole finalist to serve as the university’s 14th president. Rahul Patel, who chairs the committee, said the group reached its decision after a “robust and widespread search.”
The recommendation now goes to the Board of Trustees, with Mori Hosseini, its chair, saying he fully supports the committee’s choice.
Patel Names Bell as Finalist
Patel said Bell fits UF’s search because of his academic record and his background in athletics administration. “Dr. Bell possesses the qualities that make him a perfect fit for the University of Florida, including strong academic credential and a proven track record of athletic success,” Patel said.
He also pointed to Bell’s prior leadership at a flagship university and his relationships in higher education and the Southeastern Conference. “With his experience at the helm of a flagship university, fundraising abilities, and deep relationships across higher education, within the Southeastern Conference, and beyond, we are confident Dr. Bell will transition seamlessly into this new role and build on UF’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading public universities,” Patel said.
Patel added, “We believe Dr. Bell is uniquely positioned to help UF continue its trajectory toward becoming consistently recognized among the top three public universities in America.”
Bell's University of Alabama Record
Bell most recently served as president of the University of Alabama for 10 years, where the university increased graduation and retention rates and achieved R1 research status. Before that, he served as provost and professor of engineering at Louisiana State University and as dean of the School of Engineering and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Kansas.
His résumé also includes service on the Southeastern Conference Executive Committee from 2021 to 2025 and as president of the Southeastern Conference from 2023 to 2025. In 2023, he was inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.

UF’s next step runs through the Board of Trustees, which will consider the recommendation as the university moves toward naming its 14th president. Bell earned both his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and his B.S. in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.
