William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett reveal their 75-year marriage arrangement
William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett said their marriage began with a non-spoken arrangement and no formal rules. The pair, married on June 30, 1951, described nearly 75 years together as a relationship that never stayed neat or conventional.
Bartlett said, “There was never any discussion as to what we were going to do, but in 75 years, the two of you together, you know, it would be abnormal if you… weren’t attracted occasionally to other people.” That account, paired with Daniels’ line that he would not be with anyone else in his life than her, puts the emphasis on how the couple handled distance and attraction instead of on labels.
Bartlett’s 2023 memoir
Bartlett said the arrangement was “non-spoken” and that she and Daniels never sat down to make rules. She added, “We just don’t. We just live our lives. And if he’s away for a year, he’s away for a year. Our lives just went on, but we never got unhinged…. We never got unhinged, but our lives did go in different directions occasionally.”
She also said there have been times “on both sides,” a detail she had already addressed in her 2023 memoir, Middle of the Rainbow. In 2023, she said the beginning of the marriage was very painful and did not work well, which makes the long marriage sound less like a polished Hollywood story than a working arrangement that had to survive real strain.
Nearly 75 years together
Bartlett said the early period of the marriage did not work well, but the couple kept moving forward. She said their lives went on, and they never got unhinged, even when they were apart for long stretches.
That stability now comes with age and physical limits. Bartlett said her vision is not good, though she can walk, and Daniels has some trouble walking. She added that his memory is not as good as hers, while they have a wonderful family nearby, including their son Michael and his family, and two ladies take care of them.

The couple played George Feeny and Dean Bolander on Boy Meets World, but the bigger story here is not the credits. It is the rare public record of how two longtime actors handled an early marriage that did not follow a clean script and still lasted nearly 75 years, with family and caregiving now doing part of the work their younger lives once did.
