Truro Bearcats Fall 3-1 to Summerside in Mhl Quarterfinal
mhl ended for Truro with a 3-1 loss to the Summerside Western Capitals in the quarterfinals of the 10-team national Centennial Cup. The Bearcats were playing on Summerside’s home ice. The defeat closed a run that had already given Truro its best national finish in team history.
Greenwood's Truro run
Jon Greenwood said he was incredibly proud of what the team accomplished in Truro, especially winning a Maritime Junior A championship with a group that bought into the process every day. That line fits the season Truro built, because the Bearcats won the Maritime Junior Hockey League championship last month and tied for most regular-season points with 72.
The 10-team Centennial Cup ran from May 7 to 17. Truro reached the quarterfinals before Summerside knocked it out, so the final score ended the championship path rather than merely delaying it.
May 17 banquet
The Bearcats held their end-of-the-year banquet on May 17 and used it to split out the season’s individual honors. Eli Baillargeon received the MacQuarries 3 Stars Award, and Liam Welsh received the Will Sutherland Memorial Scholarship.
The team also honored six 20-year-olds who are aging out of junior hockey: Welsh, Jake Todd, Julien Roy, Baillargeon, Matthew Bolduc and Samuel Vachon. The farewell list gives Truro a clear offseason turnover point after a year that ended with a league title and a national quarterfinal berth.
Greenwood to Dalhousie
Greenwood will coach the Dalhousie Tigers men’s hockey program next season after a run in Truro that Dalhousie said included a 14-point improvement from year one to year two. He also oversaw coaching, recruitment, video analysis, player development and program management in Truro.
Truro thanked him by saying, “His contributions to the organization will not go unnoticed. Thank you, coach,” while also telling supporters, “This is your championship too,” and telling the aging-out players, “You’re forever Bearcats, and forever champions,” The immediate question for Truro is how much of that core can be replaced after six 20-year-olds move on and Greenwood leaves for Dalhousie.
