Philippe Chassaing turns 54, keeps Depute focus on Périgueux

Philippe Chassaing turned 54 on Monday 18 May and kept his depute profile tied to two fronts: local education work in Ribérac and political remarks about Périgueux. The former LREM lawmaker for Dordogne’s 1ere circonscription is now principal adjoint at the collège Arnaut-Daniel, where he says his job is to organize school life with families and teachers.

He said the current stretch at the school centers on year-end work and the Diplôme national du brevet. This year, he said, continuous assessment counts for 40% of the grade, while the final exam carries more weight.

Périgueux and Chassaing

Asked about Périgueux’s new municipal administration, Chassaing said he hopes it keeps its commitments and that he is skeptical about some of them. On the first action of that administration, he was direct: “Si c’est ça la première action, ça ne va pas dans le bon sens.”

He also set out where he stands on one of the city’s early choices. “Je ne suis pas d’un grand soutien des repas à 1 euro pour les maternelles,” he said, adding, “C’est un cadeau à ceux qui ont le plus de revenus.” For him, “La tarification sociale était plus juste.”

Élisabeth Borne and Bâtissons ensemble

Chassaing said it is too early to talk about future ambitions. He said he is interested in Élisabeth Borne, calling her “extrêmement courageuse” and saying she brings together ideas “de la gauche progressiste à la droite libérée” through her microparti Bâtissons ensemble.

“Je veux juste contribuer à ce débat d’idées,” he said. Chassaing added that he remains in contact with Borne, appreciates what she does and contributes when he can “par des textes.”

Bernard Cazeau and De Tocqueville

Bernard Cazeau, the former president of the Dordogne department, ex-PS senator and mayor of Ribérac, recommended a biography of De Tocqueville to Chassaing. Chassaing had already received the book before his birthday, a small detail that fits a profile split between school administration, local politics and national references.

For readers following his next move, the relevant point is not a new campaign launch. It is that Chassaing is keeping a public role through the college and keeping his political remarks focused on Périgueux and Borne, while saying his job for now is to contribute to ideas rather than announce a return.
