Leeds Spygate Could Shape Hayden Hackney’s £20million Price
Leeds spygate has put Hayden Hackney’s £20million valuation in sharper focus. Leeds United want the Middlesbrough midfielder, but the timing of Southampton’s disciplinary case could affect how hard Middlesbrough can hold on price while the 23-year-old enters the final year of his deal.
Hackney and the £20million figure
Middlesbrough are believed to be holding out for £20million for Hackney, who has become a target for Leeds after they secured their Premier League status earlier this month. Daniel Farke has already signalled the club are moving with purpose after the 1-0 win over Brighton at Elland Road, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in stoppage time.
Farke told supporters: “Right now we are also working to get one of the best teams in this country. Thanks a lot.”
Southampton’s EFL hearing
The wider squeeze on the deal comes from Southampton’s Spygate case. The EFL charged Southampton for spying on a Middlesbrough training session two days before the first leg of their play-off semi-final, and said a disciplinary hearing would be held on or before Tuesday.
Southampton are scheduled to face Hull City in the Championship play-off final on Saturday, so the ruling lands at exactly the point when clubs are balancing football demands and summer planning. For Leeds, that matters because Middlesbrough’s leverage over a player of Hackney’s age and contract position could rise or fall with the hearing’s outcome.
Leeds and Middlesbrough pressure
Leeds are 14th in the table with one match remaining and finish their season away to West Ham on Sunday, but the transfer business is already moving into view. Hackney, 23 years old, is the player at the centre of it, and Middlesbrough’s price tag is the number Leeds will have to decide whether to meet or push against.
The hearing gives the story its edge. If Middlesbrough feel strengthened by the ruling, the £20million ask becomes harder to move. If not, Leeds may see a route to negotiate below it, with Hackney’s final year of his deal adding pressure to the outcome.
