Pep Guardiola and Man Ciry Await 115-Charge Verdict Soon After Season Ends
Man ciry is nearing a verdict in its 115-charge case against the Premier League. The independent commission finished hearing the case in December 2024, and the decision is expected shortly after the current domestic season ends.
The timing leaves Manchester City in limbo while the written ruling is completed. If the club is found liable, any punishment would come later, after further hearings set the specific sanction.
Stefan Borson on the draft
Stefan Borson said the panel appears to be close to finishing its written decision. He added that the parties expect it to come out soon after the season ends, while warning that they have been wrong before.
“It’s famous last words, but it can’t take much longer. As I understand it, there are no special reasons why it’s not come out. Nobody’s ill, nobody’s negotiating behind the scenes. There’s no secret sort of plans from government to intervene or any of that stuff.”
He also said, “It’s all actually very vanilla. The original panel just simply hasn’t finished writing it up or hadn’t as of a few weeks ago.”
Premier League charges and sanctions
The Premier League charged Manchester City in February 2023 over 115 alleged financial breaches covering a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. That file has now moved from hearing room to draft decision, with the commission working through the final written ruling.
“I did hear some information from the legal circuit that would point to it coming to a close in terms of the drafting of the decision. The parties themselves do expect that it will come out soon after the season ends, but they’ve been wrong before.”
Possible sanctions include heavy fines and significant point deductions. Manchester City are almost certain to launch an immediate appeal if the club is found liable, which would extend the case beyond the first ruling and keep the outcome unsettled for longer.
Guardiola’s summer exit
Pep Guardiola is set to bring his tenure at Manchester City to an end this summer, which adds another layer to the timing around the decision. The club’s case will not be resolved before the current domestic campaign finishes, but the written ruling should follow soon after, and the next stage would determine whether punishment is imposed.
