David Moyes faces Chelsea result that could end Everton’s Europe chase
David Moyes is waiting on Tuesday night to find out whether Everton’s fading European hopes survive another day. If Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur, Everton’s continental chase would be officially extinguished.
Everton and Chelsea calculations
That outcome would leave one of Chelsea or Tottenham guaranteed to finish above the Blues, removing the route Everton need into the conversation. Even a heavy Everton win, combined with Brentford being beaten heavily at Liverpool, would not be enough to reach eighth because Everton trail Brentford by five goals on goal difference.
There is still a narrow escape route if Chelsea do not win. Roberto De Zerbi’s side could keep Everton from being mathematically out of the hunt by winning or drawing, because their goal difference is 13 better than West Ham United’s.
Jake O'Brien at right-back
Moyes also has a selection issue after Sunday’s 3-1 home defeat to Sunderland, when Jake O'Brien struggled. The Republic of Ireland international could stay at right-back, move into the middle, or make way if Everton reshuffle again.
Nathan Patterson or Seamus Coleman could step in at right-back if O'Brien is ruled out or moved into the heart of defence, while James Garner is another option after already playing there. Adam Aznou could also make a Premier League debut at left-back in place of Vitalii Mykolenko.
Spurs and Everton changes
Everton’s attacking shape remains part of the equation too. Merlin Rohl started on the right wing against Sunderland, scored his first goal in English football, and then moved into central midfield, while Beto has been leading the attack in recent weeks when fit and Thierno Barry has shared that role all season.
Idrissa Gueye remains a fitness doubt for Spurs, and Chelsea travel to Sunderland on the last day. Seamus Coleman has already announced his departure as an Everton player, so Moyes is working through one more week of uncertainty with Europe on the line and a squad that may need another reshape before the final whistle.
