Digne Sparks Aston Villa's 0-3 Europa League Final Win
Lucas digne helped Aston Villa strike first, and Youri Tielemans finished the move with a superb volley. Aston Villa then controlled the rest of Wednesday's final in Istanbul and beat Fribourg 0-3 to win the Europa League.
Tielemans Opens the Final
Digne's corner created the opening goal, and Tielemans sent the ball in with a reprise de volée that broke Fribourg's resistance. Emiliano Buendia doubled the lead with a sublime strike, and Morgan Rogers made it 3-0 at the hour mark.
Emery's Fifth Final Win
Unai Emery's side finished the competition with a title after a run that began with seven wins in eight league-phase matches. Villa then cleared Lille 3-0 on aggregate in the round of 16, beat Bologne 7-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, and moved past Nottingham 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
The result also added a new European trophy to Aston Villa's record, with the club's only previous continental title coming in 1982. Emery now has five Europa League final wins in six finals, and the final score in Istanbul matched the scale of Villa's route through the knockout rounds.
Onana Returns in Istanbul
Amadou Onana came on in the 66th minute after returning from injury, giving Villa another midfield option late in the match. He had recently injured his calf and missed the second leg of the semi-final, so his appearance added a clean end to a night that Villa had already put beyond Fribourg's reach.
