Victor Wembanyama parents shaped his basketball path long before he reached the NBA, and his mother, Élodie de Fautereau, was a former member of the French national basketball team. He grew up in a family where basketball was part of the inheritance, with his mother coaching young children and his father, Félix, coming from track and field instead of the sport he chose.

De Fautereau stands 6 feet 3 inches and now coaches young children in basketball. Wembanyama credited her with introducing him to the game and said he spent much of his early childhood at the gym where she was coaching.
He also said he had the choice to play or not play basketball, but the sport was always around. “I mean, I had the choice and I still have the choice to play or not play basketball, but basketball has always been around,” he said. “I can't avoid it in my family.”
Félix, Ève and Oscar
The family background stretches beyond his mother. Félix competed in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, while both parents stand well above six feet. His older sister, Ève, plays basketball professionally today, and his younger brother, Oscar, has already won a junior national title with Wembanyama’s former team, Nanterre 92.
Wembanyama’s path still included other sports before basketball took over. He played goalkeeper in soccer and practiced judo before settling on the game that later carried him from France to the San Antonio Spurs as the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
From France to Paris
He started his career in France at age 15, then became the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year and later won an Olympic silver medal with France at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. Wembanyama also said of his mother, “She’s more like me. We really look alike, and she’s kind of eccentric sometimes.”
He fell into de Fautereau’s arms after the United States defeated France in the gold medal match at the 2024 Olympics, a moment that tied his family story directly to the biggest stage in the sport.
