Toronto Fire Extinguishes 5-Alarm Blaze at Phatboy Fireworks

toronto fire said a 5-alarm blaze at Phatboy Fireworks in Etobicoke was out before 6 a.m. Monday after a vehicle crashed into the store at 1770 Albion Rd. near Hwy. 27 around 12:50 a.m. The fireworks shop was destroyed, and no injuries were reported.

Police said no one was located in the vehicle. Firefighters remained on the scene Monday morning while nearby units next to Phatboy Fireworks were also damaged.

Albion Road crash

The fire broke out just after midnight, when the car hit the building and both the vehicle and the store caught fire. The call brought a 5-alarm response to the Etobicoke site, a level that drew enough crews to contain a blaze that had already spread through the fireworks store.

By Monday morning, the scene had shifted from active flames to cleanup and damage assessment. Thick, heavy smoke was still visible after the fire was extinguished, and the destroyed store left a gap in the strip of units on Albion Road.

Phatboy Fireworks damage

Phatboy Fireworks took the direct hit in the crash, but the damage did not stop there. Units next to the store were also damaged, which leaves neighboring businesses facing repairs after a fire that started with the vehicle impact.

For customers, employees, and nearby tenants, the immediate issue is the same: the store is gone, the scene stayed active into Monday morning, and police said there was no one in the vehicle when officers arrived. Simon McKeown reported the fire for the Toronto Star staff.
