East Lothian road closures start at 5am for Edinburgh Marathon 2026
Extensive road closures and parking restrictions will hit East Lothian for edinburgh marathon 2026 from 5am on Sunday. Most parking controls start on Saturday evening, and all restrictions are due off by 6.30pm on Sunday.
Musselburgh to Longniddry
The route brings thousands of runners across 26.2 miles from Potterrow in Edinburgh to Portobello, then through Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton, and Longniddry before the turn at Gosford House and the run back to Musselburgh for the finish at Pinkie Playing Fields. The event sold out months ago, so the closure window will catch a busy marathon weekend across several East Lothian communities.
Sections Three to Seven
Road and parking restrictions are split into seven zones, with sections three to seven covering East Lothian residents. A199 Edinburgh Road will be closed eastbound from its boundaries with City of Edinburgh Council to its junction with New Street.
New Street will be closed between Edinburgh Road and the unnamed entrance to No. 204 New Street and between Links View and Eskside West. Harbour Road will be closed at its junction with New Street, while Eastside East will be shut between the River Esk footbridge and Shorthope Street, including Millhill Car Park, and between its junction at James Street and Goosegreen Crescent.
New Street and Goose Green
Several streets will be closed in their entirety: Eskside West, Links View, Shorthope Street, James Street, Goosegreen Crescent, Balcarres Road, the unnamed entrance west of New Street, Downie Place, Ladywell, Eskdale Mews, Mountjoy Terrace and Mountjoy Court. Bush Street, Caird’s Row, Beach Lane and Links Street will be closed at their junction with Promenade, Links Avenue will be closed at its junction with Links View, Gracefield Car Park will be closed at its entrance and exit onto New Street, and Goose Green Road, Goose Green Court, Goose Green Avenue and Goose Green Place will all face junction closures tied to Goose Green Crescent and Balcarres Road.
For drivers and residents, the practical limit is simple: Saturday evening is when parking controls start, Sunday at 5am is when the road closures take hold, and 6.30pm is when the network is due to reopen. Anyone needing to move through those East Lothian streets will have to work around that window, not the other way round.
