Stuart Harvey Joins Stoke City Technical Director Appointment

Stoke City technical director appointment brought Stuart Harvey to the club after four years at Sunderland. The 45-year-old steps into a role that sits under sporting director Jonathan Walters as Stoke try to move on from a 17th-place finish and a long run outside the Championship top half.

Harvey’s route through Sunderland

Harvey arrives with a track record built over two clubs and two different levels of the game. He spent four years as head of player recruitment at Sunderland, where he helped the club move from League One to the Premier League.

Before that spell, he worked in various roles at Blackburn Rovers for six years. That gives Stoke a technical director whose career has moved through recruitment and club operations rather than one fixed lane, with experience across different environments and demands.

Walters adds another layer

Walters set out the logic behind the move in remarks to the club website. “Stuart is a highly respected operator in the game, who most recently played a much-valued role in Sunderland's journey to the Premier League,” he said. “His knowledge and experience have been built across a number of clubs and environments throughout his career.”

He added: “Stuart has developed a strong reputation in the game and understands the standards and detail needed to help drive success.” Walters also said: “This appointment is another important step as we continue to strengthen the football club in all areas, and Stuart's arrival shows the ambition and commitment to keep moving the club forward and give us the best possible platform to be successful on the pitch.”

Stoke’s 17th-place backdrop

The appointment lands against a season that ended with Stoke 17th in the Championship under manager Mark Robins. They have not finished in the top half since being relegated from the Premier League in 2018, and they will play in the Championship for a ninth consecutive campaign next season.

For Stoke, the practical shift is clear: Harvey will report to Walters, and the club is using the summer to keep tightening its football structure after another lower-half finish. The new setup puts recruitment, standards and planning closer together as Stoke try to reset the level they have been operating at since 2018.
