A228 Pembury Northern Bypass

Emergency services were called after reports that the car had left the road near Pembury. The location places the collision on a stretch of the bypass that runs between Tonbridge Road and Old Church Road, giving witnesses a specific section of road to focus on if they were travelling through the area around the time of the crash.

Driver and passenger

The man driving the Renault was 64. He died at the scene. The passenger, a 60-year-old woman, was taken by air ambulance to a London hospital, where she later died. Police said the pair were both local to the area, linking the crash to the community that uses that road network every day.

Police appeal

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash or has relevant dashcam footage to contact the force. For drivers who were on the A228 Pembury Northern Bypass on Monday morning, the useful detail is the time: about 11:45 BST. That is the window investigators are using as they try to piece together what happened before the Renault left the road and struck trees.

The appeal now turns on witnesses and video from passing vehicles. Anyone with footage from that stretch of road around the time of the crash can help fill in the moments before and after the car entered the woodland.
