Brian Gutierrez Starts Mexico's Puebla Push With Ghana Friendly
brian gutierrez opened Mexico’s final push toward the 2026 World Cup on Friday night in Puebla, where El Tri faced Ghana in a friendly. Javier Aguirre is using the match as one of four pre-tournament tests while fringe players chase one of 26 roster spots.
Mexico in Puebla
Mexico arrived with a camp that began on May 6, when Aguirre called in 20 Liga MX players to start work ahead of the tournament. He had already spent two weeks training with that group before overseas-based players began filtering in, including captain Edson Álvarez and Guillermo Ochoa.
The setup gave Mexico a longer runway than Ghana, which came with a squad built mostly from local league players and U-23 talent. Mexico also had home advantage in Puebla’s altitude, and the talent gap was expected to lean toward the hosts, even after Mexico’s impressive draws against Portugal and Belgium.
Aguirre's roster decisions
For players on the edge of the squad, the Ghana match carried real weight. It was one of the final two chances to win a place in Mexico’s 26-man World Cup roster, and it came before Aguirre announces the final group that will go to the tournament.
Johan Vásquez had not yet reported to camp, which left Aguirre managing a group that was still coming together while he evaluated options. That matters because the coach only has four pre-tournament friendlies to sort out the roster and the shape of the team before June 11, when Mexico opens against South Africa.
Australia before the roster
Mexico is scheduled to play another friendly against Australia before Aguirre unveils his World Cup roster. That gives him one more chance to compare the players who arrived early with the overseas group now joining camp, and to decide which fringe names stay in the conversation.
Friday night in Puebla was the first step in that stretch. For Mexico, the next few weeks are not about building a storyline around one game; they are about turning a scattered camp into a final squad that can survive June 11.
