Ottawa Race Weekend shuts downtown roads for Saturday and Sunday — Marathon Ottawa
Most major downtown Ottawa roads will close this weekend as marathon ottawa returns with sold-out races on Saturday and Sunday. Thousands are expected in the downtown core, and the city’s main race corridors will be tied up for hours on both days.
Runners will cover the 5K, 10K, 21.1K and 42.1K events, all starting from City Hall. The course also runs through major parts of Ottawa and Gatineau, so the closures reach well beyond a single block or one race start.
City Hall Starts
Saturday’s closures are expected from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Sunday’s from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. That gives downtown travelers two separate windows to work around, and the early Sunday start is the tighter of the two.
Line 1 and Line 2 trains will start at 5:00 a.m. on May 24, giving racegoers and downtown travelers an earlier rail option before the roads are tied up again. For anyone trying to move through the core, that timing is the clearest operational change on the weekend schedule.
Ottawa And Gatineau Route
The race route stretches through major parts of Ottawa and Gatineau, which means the impact is not limited to the City Hall area alone. Sold-out fields also mean the downtown core is absorbing not just runners, but the crowds that follow them.
Sunday may be the tougher day to navigate. Environment Canada shows rain is likely, showers are expected, and temperatures should hover around 14 C, adding another layer for spectators, volunteers and anyone trying to move around the closures.
Race Weekend Access
Anyone headed downtown should plan around the Saturday and Sunday closure windows before leaving home. The roads, the transit start times and the weather all point to the same thing: the race weekend is already set, and the core will be moving on race time.
