Charles Mcadoo Starts at Second Base in Buffalo for First Time

charles mcadoo started at second base for Triple-A Buffalo for the first time this season on Thursday night, a new look for a player the Blue Jays are trying to push toward the majors. He has mostly played first base and third base this year, but the move puts another spot on his résumé as his bat keeps trending in the right direction.

McAdoo’s bat keeps moving

McAdoo has a.259 batting average, a.812 OPS and seven home runs, and he has been Buffalo’s top right-handed bat. That production is the reason the Blue Jays are widening the defensive map instead of treating him as a corner-only option.

“Charles McAdoo's bat seems to be ready for the major leagues.”

Blue Jays clear a path

The roster picture explains the move. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blocks first base, Kazuma Okamoto blocks third base and George Springer is at designated hitter, while Ernie Clement holds second base and Andres Gimenez is at shortstop. Lenyn Sosa and Davis Schneider sit behind Clement and Gimenez on the depth chart, so McAdoo needs more than one route if he is going to force his way into the mix.

First base no longer enough

That is why the start at second base matters. Buffalo has already shown the Blue Jays what McAdoo can do at the corners, but the Thursday night assignment broadened his defensive range and gave the club another way to test him before a promotion.

The first trip to the big leagues could be coming soon, and the second-base start is part of the work that makes that possible. If McAdoo keeps hitting and keeps handling new spots, the Blue Jays have a cleaner path to use him when they need another right-handed bat.
