Hackney Fire Under Control After Eight Engines Reach Lower Clapton

A hackney fire at a mixed-use building near Chatsworth Road and Glenarm Road in Lower Clapton drew eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters on Saturday evening, May 23. London Fire Brigade said the fire was under control, while crews stayed on scene to dampen down.

Chatsworth Road closure

The building housed shops and flats, and Chatsworth Road remained closed between Millfields Road and Homerton High Street while firefighters worked. London Fire Brigade received the first of 50 calls at 2134, then mobilised crews from Stoke Newington, Leyton, Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Tottenham and Whitechapel fire stations.

Tottenham turntable ladder

A 32-metre turntable ladder from Tottenham Fire Station attended and was deployed as an observation tower, giving the Incident Commander greater situational awareness at the scene. That response matched the scale of the building and the number of calls that came in within minutes.

Lower Clapton investigation

There were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and the remaining crews were expected to stay in place over the coming hours while they damped down the site.
