Ahn Hyo-seop Debuts With Khalid on Something Special

Ahn Hyo-seop made his official solo music debut with khalid on “Something Special,” turning a long-private goal into a released collaboration. Speaking from his home in Seoul over Zoom, the 31-year-old said, “I’m feeling pretty great,” after a project that pushed him back into music on a global stage.

Seoul to Han River

He said the year had not been the busiest of his life, but several big events had come up, and that he had even had some time to sleep before the interview. When he first heard the demo, he was driving, looking at the Han River on a sunny day, and called it a moment when “everything just felt so perfect.”

Ahn and his team were approached by Musicow for the FANDOM project, and he was given only the platform’s purpose and a demo of the song. He called his company back and told them he would accept the project “no matter what.” That kind of instinct matters in a business where a debut can either arrive as a one-off feature or open a longer run of recorded work.

Woo RAINSTONE Rhee

He later learned that the track would be produced by Woo “RAINSTONE” Rhee and Troy “R8DIO” Johnson. Once he heard Khalid was involved, he said, “Unless I have a call with Khalid, I’m not going to believe the whole thing is real.” He eventually chatted with Khalid through FaceTime after he began recording the track.

Ahn said he and Khalid bonded over their love of music, especially R&B and Soul, and that he was “very happy that I was able to work with Khalid,” while also calling him “very nice in person.” That pairing gave the release more than novelty: it linked a Korean actor re-entering music with a multi-platinum recording artist whose name carries instant global recognition.

Childhood Music Pull

He said he had wanted to be an artist since he was a child, left Canada at 17 to pursue music in Korea, and became a trainee at JYP Entertainment. After three strenuous years, he changed direction because he did not want his love for music to become stressful or work, then shifted his energy into acting and kept music as a hobby.

Even then, the habit never went away. He said he practiced singing, made music with his friends, went to karaoke, and constantly listened to music. His return with “Something Special” reads less like a side project than a reset, especially for listeners who have followed him mainly through acting.

The clearest takeaway is that Ahn is not treating this as a novelty credit. He accepted the project with almost no detail, heard the producer names, waited for the Khalid call, and then moved ahead anyway. For a first solo release, that sequence signals conviction rather than trial balloon behavior.

He also said the KPop Demon Hunters role was for his acting ability, with only a minor moment to showcase his vocal talent, which makes “Something Special” the more direct test of where his music interest goes next. The debut gives him a recorded starting point, and the next question is whether he treats it as a single collaboration or the opening move in a fuller music run.
