Social Security Administration May Payments Reach $5,181 on May 27

Millions of retirees and other beneficiaries are set to receive social security administration may payments on Wednesday, May 27, when the Social Security Administration sends its next round of May checks. The payment goes to people born between the 21st and 31st of any month.

More than 70 million people receive Social Security benefits, and the agency uses a staggered monthly schedule. For some retirees, the monthly amount can reach as much as $5,181, depending on earnings history and the age they started claiming benefits.

May 27 payment group

The May 27 payment is tied to birth dates, not to a single retirement date or claim type. Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st are the group scheduled to receive this round of May payments.

The agency’s staggered system spreads payments across the month. That leaves one scheduled group for this date and sets up the next monthly cycle in June using the same payment structure.

Benefit amounts and claiming age

Benefit levels vary with lifetime earnings and when a worker starts collecting. A worker retiring at full retirement age in 2026 could receive about $4,152 per month, while someone claiming at age 62 would receive around $2,969.

Delaying benefits until age 70 could increase monthly payments to as much as $5,181. As of April 2026, the average monthly Social Security payment for a retired worker stood at $2,026.41.

Mary Johnson on 2027 COLA

Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security analyst, projected a 2027 COLA increase of 4.2 percent. The Senior Citizens League estimated the 2027 COLA could reach 3.9 percent, both above this year’s 2.8 percent adjustment.

The Social Security Administration determines the COLA by comparing average CPI-W readings from July, August and September with the same period a year earlier. Over the past 12 months, the CPI-W has risen 3.9 percent.

Workers generally qualify for retirement benefits after earning 40 Social Security credits, which most people collect after around a decade in the workforce. For people checking their May deposit, the practical takeaway is simple: the next payment date is May 27, and the amount will depend on when they claimed and what they earned.
