Bill Tierney, Princeton University visit lifts 25-year title anniversary
Bill Tierney is in Charlottesville as Princeton University men’s lacrosse prepares for the championship game in Monday’s final. The program will honor the 25-year anniversary of its most recent national title at halftime of the game.
Tierney, Princeton’s former head coach and now the Philadelphia Waterdogs coach, said he is writing a book and that he is already deep into it. “I’m writing my book,” he said. “I’m up to 390 pages.”
Tierney and Princeton history
Tierney won seven NCAA championships as a head coach, including six at Princeton and one at Denver. He also said, “She makes me eat four vegetables a day,” referring to his wife, Helen. He will be 75 in a few months.
Princeton’s current players saw him in the hotel ballroom area during Championship Weekend. Junior captain Colin Burns said, “It was like meeting a celebrity,” and added, “We know he’s a legend. Six nattys in 10 years. That’s legendary.”

Princeton is staying in a Charlottesville hotel during the weekend, with the team’s visit to Tierney linking the present roster to the coach most closely associated with its championship run. Princeton’s 25-year title anniversary will be recognized at halftime while the team competes for another national title against Notre Dame.
