NHSGGC warns over 20C Glasgow heat as 111 advice issued — Edinburgh Live
edinburgh live reports that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is urging people to take simple steps to protect themselves and their families as Glasgow temperatures are set to stay high over the coming days. The warning comes during the bank holiday, when GP practices are closed and some community pharmacies have reduced hours or are shut.
Dr John O'Dowd's advice
Dr John O'Dowd, interim director of public health for NHSGGC, said the warm weather and bank holiday are a chance to spend time outdoors with family and friends. He urged people to do that safely by protecting themselves in the sun, staying hydrated and preparing food properly.
The health board said common problems in warmer weather can include sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration, food poisoning, bites and stings. It told people to use high-factor sunscreen, wear suitable clothing, drink enough fluids, cook barbecue food thoroughly and evenly, and keep over-the-counter medicines, antihistamines and a simple first aid kit at home.
Fraser McJannett on care
Fraser McJannett, director of primary care and GP out of hours for NHSGGC, said GP practices are closed today for the bank holiday and some pharmacies are closed or operating reduced hours. He said people should use home care first, including NHS Inform and the NHS 24 Online App, if their condition can be treated that way.
If the problem cannot be treated at home and cannot wait until a GP reopens, McJannett said people should call NHS 24 on 111. He said the GP Out of Hours service is appointment only and that calling 111 first helps direct people to the right care quickly.
NHSGGC and A&E
O'Dowd also said, "By thinking ABC before attending A&E, you can make sure you are getting the right care in the right place, while also helping to protect services for those who need them most." Anyone with a very urgent or life-threatening condition should call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
