Ivar Stenberg Fits Canucks' Third Pick In 2026 NHL Draft

ivar stenberg is in the middle of the Vancouver Canucks’ discussion at third overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. The winger’s rise matters because Vancouver has not picked this high since taking the Sedin twins in 1999.

Stenberg is 18 and already has a case built on more than one tournament run. He helped lead Sweden to a gold medal at the World Juniors in January, then kept adding to that profile with strong production for Frölunda and Sweden.

Stenberg’s Sweden track record

The Swedish winger has moved through every major age group on the way up. He represented Sweden at the U16, U17, U18 and U20 levels, played J20 as a 16-year-old and was in professional SHL games by the time he was 17 years old.

That path has put him in front of NHL talent evaluators for a while, and they view him as the most NHL-ready prospect in the class. He also handled major minutes in all situations for Sweden’s senior national team at the World Championships, finishing with seven points in six games.

Frölunda and the SHL case

His club season is part of the same argument. Stenberg produced at a borderline historic rate for Frölunda in the SHL this season and finished with 11 points in his final 24 games of the SHL and Champions League season.

The Canucks’ interest sits in the middle of that production curve. Vancouver is a rebuilding team with a rare chance to add an elite prospect, and the third pick gives it a shot at a player who has already shown he can score against older competition and handle heavy usage.

Canucks at third overall

The fit is not without friction. Stenberg is a winger, and there are concerns tied to his height and to the value of taking a winger in the top five, but the production keeps his name in the conversation.

For Vancouver, the decision at third overall comes down to whether that mix of age, pace and international results is enough to make him the choice. The franchise has waited since 1999 for a pick this high, and Stenberg’s case is built on a season that gave scouts numbers, minutes and a gold medal to weigh together.
