Louis Garneau Ends All Activities After Burnout Diagnosis
Louis Garneau ended all of his activities after being diagnosed with professional burnout. The move also shuts down the Espace Louis-Garneau museum he had just inaugurated in Sainte-Christine-d’Auvergne, in Portneuf. The change comes after he had only recently pushed ahead with new projects.
Louis Garneau stops everything
The businessman and former Olympian said Tuesday that he was taking an indefinite rest and that retirement was beginning. "Je me mets au repos pour un temps indéterminé et c’est la retraite qui commence," he said.
He added that burnout was not new to him. "C’est toujours gênant de parler d’un épuisement professionnel. Ce n’est pas la première fois que ça m’arrive, je me suis donné beaucoup dans ma vie. Ça va aider les gens à comprendre que la décision ait été aussi rapide."
That decision ends a sharp pivot from recent months, when he was still launching two new bicycle brands. Garneau had sold his namesake cycling clothing brand to Lolë in 2024, but he had not stepped away from new ventures before this announcement.
Espace Louis-Garneau closes fast
The museum project had only just opened in the church of Sainte-Christine-d’Auvergne, in Portneuf. Garneau bought the building after it was listed for sale on Marketplace, then turned it into Espace Louis-Garneau.
The church was supposed to display his paintings and include a cyclist café. Its first exhibition was dedicated to children's bicycles, setting up a space that mixed personal collection pieces with cycling history.
Garneau said an offer had already been submitted for the building, leaving the former church in a new state just as the museum concept was getting started. The abrupt end leaves the site without the project that was meant to anchor it, and Garneau’s retirement now closes the door on the museum before it had time to settle in.
