Sam Laporta Still In Lions' Long-Term Plans After Schefter Update

sam laporta remains in Detroit’s long-term plans, with Adam Schefter saying the Lions still want to work out a long-term pact with the tight end. That keeps LaPorta squarely in the same extension pipeline as other key members of the 2023 draft class.

LaPorta Sits In Detroit’s Core

Brad Holmes identified four members of the Lions’ 2023 draft class as priorities in January, and LaPorta was one of them. The group also includes Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell and Brian Branch, putting Detroit’s draft decisions at the center of its roster planning.

LaPorta’s contract status makes the timing straightforward. Because he was not a first-round pick, he was not eligible for a fifth-year option, which means he will be out of contract at the end of the 2026 season unless a new pact is worked out before then.

Jack Campbell Set The Pattern

Detroit has already moved on one of those priorities. Jack Campbell was extended recently, giving the Lions one recent example of how they are handling the class that arrived in 2023.

That leaves LaPorta as the next notable name in the group, and his value is easy to see from the production around him. Gibbs is in line for a deal paying in excess of $15 million per year after finding the end zone 49 times in as many games, with 39 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns, a 5.3 YPC average on 675 career attempts, and a fresh 77-catch season.

Detroit’s 2023 Draft Class

LaPorta is tied to that same draft class, and the Lions have already shown they are willing to act early when they see a priority. With Campbell already done and Gibbs trending toward a major payday, the tight end now sits in the group Detroit has chosen to address rather than push down the road.

For LaPorta, the practical timeline is simple: Detroit still wants him, and the clock runs through the 2026 season. If a deal is not reached before then, he reaches the market with no fifth-year option to extend the team’s control.
