Felix Auger watch as Shapovalov falls in straight sets

felix auger was in focus Tuesday as Denis Shapovalov was eliminated from the French Open after a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 loss to Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria. The defeat ended Shapovalov’s run in the first round and dropped his season record to 8-11.

Shapovalov’s 48 errors

Shapovalov had chances to stretch the match. He hit 10 aces, but the numbers around that serve never settled his game, as he finished with eight double faults and 48 unforced errors.

Faria handled the tighter points. He broke to go up 6-5 in the second set and then served for the win, taking control after a set that had stayed close through the early games.

Faria’s late breaks

The third set followed the same pattern. Faria moved ahead 2-1 on an early break, Shapovalov got the next return game, and then another break restored the Portuguese player’s lead before he served it out.

That left the Canadian out of the tournament despite entering the French Open ranked 39th in the world. For a player carrying an 8-11 season mark, the result adds another early exit to a year that has not produced enough clean finishes on the biggest stages.

Auger-Aliassime on Tuesday

Later on Tuesday, Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime faced Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. Victoria Mboko also kept Canadian interest alive by beating Czechia’s Nikola Bartunkova 6-1, 6-2 in 69 minutes, a result that moved the ninth seed into the third round against Katerina Siniakova.

Mboko faced two break points and saved one, then backed up a French Open debut last year that reached the third round. On a day when Shapovalov’s margins were too loose to survive, Canada still had another path forward in Paris.
