Camp Lejeune warns Browns Island boaters under 33 CFR 334.440

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune warned lejeune boaters and visitors to stay away from Browns Island and nearby waters. The island remains strictly off limits, including to civilians and military personnel. The warning covers the island, nearby shorelines, surrounding waters, creeks and tributaries.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Cummings, the director of Range Control at Camp Lejeune, said the area contains hazards ranging from 500-pound air-delivered bombs to 25- and 40-millimeter high-explosive dual-purpose munitions. He also said, "Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune wants to ensure the safety of our boating public," and added, "Civilian watercraft must never beach or drop anchor on or near restricted areas that are posted with warning signs."

North Onslow Beach and Bear Island

Browns Island sits between North Onslow Beach and Bear Island along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Military police and the U.S. Coast Guard regularly patrol the area, and the restrictions are enforced under federal regulations outlined in 33 CFR 334.440.

The practical instruction for boaters is simple: stay out of the posted area and do not anchor or beach near it. Camp Lejeune said additional information about Browns Island restrictions is available through the base, leaving the warning in place as patrols continue.
