Serge Savard: St-Louis Says Canadiens Must Refind Identity Before Game 4

serge savard and the Canadiens reached Tuesday with Martin St-Louis pushing one message before Game 4: play to their identity or keep drifting from what works. He said Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook missed the morning skate at the Bell Centre, but both are expected to be available Wednesday night.

Martin St-Louis at Bell Centre

The head coach did not lean on the lineup question as the main issue. Instead, he said the Canadiens have to play according to their strengths and identity, and he described the group as having been a little stubborn at times.

“On a des options au sein de notre formation, et on peut créer davantage lorsqu’on joue en fonction de nos forces et de notre identité, que ce soit comme trio, comme joueur, peu importe.” That was the clearest line from St-Louis about what he wants from his team before Game 4 against the Hurricanes of Carolina.

Dach and Newhook return

Only 2 players were absent from the morning skate on 27 mai: Dach and Newhook. St-Louis said both will be available Wednesday night, so the Canadiens were able to skate with near-full availability while preparing at the Bell Centre.

That matters because the coach’s comments were not just about availability. He said the team had moved away from its identity at times, and he tied that lapse to execution, puck management, and pace rather than to a lack of options on the bench.

“Par moments, j’ai l’impression qu’on a été un peu têtus et qu'on s'est éloignés de notre identité, ce qui fait qu’on ne joue pas en fonction de nos forces.” He added that giving up the puck and getting it back is part of creating forecheck pressure, physical play, and speed.

Game 4 on Wednesday

Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday at 20 h 00 HE, and St-Louis’s message gives the Canadiens a clear target before puck drop: sharper decisions, cleaner puck management, and a style closer to their strengths. If the lineup stays intact, the pressure shifts from availability to execution.
