Marc Johnson Cause Of Death: Skateboarder Dies at 49

Marc Johnson cause of death was not immediately disclosed after the influential professional skateboarder died at 49. Louie Barletta announced Johnson’s death in a statement shared by Thrasher Magazine, closing a career that helped define modern street skating.

Johnson’s San Jose rise

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1977, Johnson relocated to California and became closely associated with the San Jose skate scene and the Tilt Mode Army. He first gained national prominence skating for Maple, then later founded the skate brand Enjoi.

By 2007, Johnson had become one of skateboarding’s defining figures. Thrasher Magazine named him Skater of the Year that year, and his part in Lakai’s Fully Flared became one of the most celebrated sections in street skating video history.

Barletta’s tribute

Barletta said Johnson had visited him in San Jose less than a month ago and appeared “sober, healthy, and full of life.” In his statement, he called Johnson “one of the most talented and creative people to ever step on or off a skateboard.”

He added, “Without a shadow of a doubt, Marc Johnson was the single most influential person in my life.” He also said, “Everything he did was art.” Johnson had discussed his recovery from alcohol addiction in interviews later in life.

Johnson’s death leaves a clear gap in the history of modern street skating, where his inventive style and Bay Area roots were central to the era that built his reputation. For fans and skaters, the lasting record is already fixed in the 2007 honors, the Fully Flared section and the influence Barletta described so directly.
