Alexandra Grant Details Creative Balance at LOVEwine Launch in Los Angeles
alexandra grant used the launch of her new LOVEwine brand in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 28, to spell out how she and Keanu Reeves keep their creative work separate enough to stay productive. The 53-year-old visual artist framed that balance as a matter of mutual respect, not distance.
“He's always so appreciative, so he's always cautious, I think, with feedback, and I would say the same,” Grant said. She added, “You want to always be respectful and leave the other person to bake their cake. Just talking about my love makes me sweat.”
Grant and Reeves in the studio
Grant said the couple gives each other room to work, even when a conversation could continue indefinitely. “I would say that there is all the listening in the world that we know that we could talk about any problem or challenge or creative idea and talk about it forever if that is needed, and also respect the individual need to dive deep and have a process that's maybe quiet or in another collaboration,” she said.
She tied that approach to the way they move through projects. “So I'd say the key to it is the mutual respect and also just like, come on, it's play, right? It's play that we get to play creatively, and then the last thing I will say that I think we share is just the belief in projects,” she said. “Every project has its own autonomy, its own team, it has its own sort of rules, and it has a beginning, middle and end.”
John Wick, Neo, and painting
Grant also pointed to Reeves’ film roles as part of the same dynamic, saying, “So we both are people who do projects, and you know, I've lived with John Wick, I've lived with Neo.” She said, “When he's in a character, for example, I have so much respect for that understanding that this is the middle to the end of a project, right?”
That same framework, she said, applies to her own painting. “And I think the same goes for painting,” Grant said. “When I'm in painter mode, I am in it. I'm fully in it, and it's not playing a character, but it is performing, you know, painting really is a form of performance too.”
LOVEwine and Paris
LOVEwine is a collaboration between grantLOVE and California’s J Vineyards and Winery, and Grant used the launch to connect the brand to a memory from seventh and eighth grade. Her interest in wine began during a summer in Paris, when she lived in a tiny French hotel room with her mother, an American diplomat stationed in France at the time.
Grant, who has been romantically linked to Reeves since 2019 and went public with him two years after first connecting professionally through Ode to Happiness, now has a consumer brand that sits alongside an already broad art practice. Her work has been shown from Los Angeles to New York City, as well as in East Lansing, Michigan, Baltimore, Maryland, and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
