Phú Quốc draws 1.17 million foreign visitors, lifts An Giang tourism
Phú Quốc drew more than 1.17 million international visitors in the first five months of 2026, pushing the island to the center of An Giang's tourism growth. Bùi Quốc Thái, director of the An Giang Department of Tourism, said Phú Quốc became the “đầu tàu” bringing the province's image to the world.
That total gave Phú Quốc nearly 99 percent of the province's international visitors in the period, while An Giang welcomed more than 13.3 million tourists and earned about 33,169 billion đồng from tourism. The island's foreign arrivals rose 51 percent, according to the provincial tourism figures.
Bùi Quốc Thái on Phú Quốc
Thái said, “Phú Quốc trở thành “đầu tàu” đưa hình ảnh An Giang ra thế giới”. The province's tourism performance is therefore tied closely to one destination, not spread evenly across the map.
Phú Quốc's rise came alongside upgraded Phú Quốc International Airport, more direct flights from South Korea, China, Singapore, and Thailand, and a 30-day visa exemption for international visitors. The island also has a chain of 5-star resorts, amusement parks, and casinos developed through Vinpearl and Sun Group.
An Giang tourism figures
An Giang's tourism system now includes more than 1,150 accommodation establishments with nearly 40,000 rooms, along with more than 590 licensed active tour guides and 143 licensed travel businesses. The province has also modernized promotion with virtual reality video websites, online ticketing, mobile applications, and AI cameras.
The concentration on Phú Quốc leaves An Giang's broader tourism plan dependent on the island's pace, including spillover to Hà Tiên, Rạch Giá, Hòn Sơn, Châu Đốc, Núi Sam, Núi Cấm, and Trà Sư. An Giang is also seeking approval for a plan to develop Phú Quốc into a high-quality international eco-tourism center as it prepares for the APEC 2027 high-level conference on the island.
