Glenn Whelan Takes Charge at Livingston After Relegation

Glenn Whelan has been appointed head coach at Livingston, giving the club a former Republic of Ireland international to lead its push back to the Scottish Premiership. The 42-year-old steps in after Livingston were relegated following two wins from 38 league games.

Whelan and Livingston

Whelan was capped 91 times by the Republic of Ireland and arrives with coaching experience at Bristol Rovers and Wigan Athletic, where he had two brief spells as interim manager. Livingston are asking him to steer them back up after returning to the top flight last summer and then dropping out again in a season that finished with just two league wins.

Martindale’s view

David Martindale backed the appointment with a clear endorsement of Whelan’s approach. “His beliefs and values align very well with ours, and we are delighted to give him this opportunity,” he said.

Martindale also pointed to the scale of Whelan’s playing career, adding: “To have played close to 100 games for his country and over 300 games in the Premier League shows that we are bringing in an elite mindset and an individual with a real winning mentality.” Whelan spent 10 seasons at Stoke City and also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Hearts.

Livingston’s reset

The appointment follows a year of change at the club. Martindale ended his six-year stint as manager in January, and Marvin Bartley stepped down after relegation was confirmed. Whelan’s first task is simple: make Livingston competitive enough to climb straight back into the Scottish Premiership.

Whelan said he is ready for that job. “I will give my all for the club moving forward,” he said. “I’m eager to grasp this opportunity and help build a successful team that the fans can be truly proud of and get right behind. I’m grateful to the board for their belief in me, and the hard work has already begun.”
