Nigeria Vs Jamaica: Nigeria Win Penalties After 2-2 Final

Nigeria vs Jamaica ended with Nigeria lifting the Unity Cup after a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw after extra time. The defending champions claimed a third title in the competition at The Valley, turning a tight final into another west London finish they controlled when the shootout arrived.

The Valley Final

Nigeria beat Zimbabwe 2-0 earlier in the week, while Jamaica reached the final after a 2-0 win over India. That set up a meeting between two strong squads at Charlton Athletic’s home ground, with Eric Chelle’s side carrying the pressure of defending a title they had already won before in this competition.

The final itself needed more than 90 minutes to separate nothing. It finished 2-2 after extra time, and Nigeria then won on penalties to close out the title. That result added another trophy to a competition that returned last year after 21 years away and again featured teams with deep London links.

Chelle’s Nigeria Squad

Chelle named a strong group for the tournament, and two players stood out in the route to the final. Femi Azeez scored a brace on his international debut for Nigeria, while Arthur Okwonkwo also made his debut for the national team.

Nigeria’s semi-final win over Ghana had already come through Razak Simpson’s own goal, and the final carried a different kind of test. Jamaica arrived with Joel Latibeaudiere, Isaac Hayden and Bailey Cadamarteri in their squad, after Richard King’s stoppage-time penalty sent them past Trinidad earlier in the week and Courtney Clarke plus Kaheim Dixon scored against India.

West London Title

The final also pushed Nigeria to a third Unity Cup title in west London. Their 2004 run at The Valley included wins over Ireland and Jamaica, and this year’s victory at the same ground matched that history with a cleaner ending only at the shootout line.

Ghana beat Trinidad 4-0 in the third-place play-off, with Jordan Ayew opening the scoring and Razak Simpson adding a second after his semi-final own goal. But the title stayed with Nigeria, and the penalty win left Jamaica one step short after a final that could not be settled in open play.
