Nolan Teasley among candidates as Ray Agnew interviews for Vikings GM job

nolan teasley was among the names the Minnesota Vikings were considering while Detroit Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew interviewed for the open general manager job on Friday and was told the team would go in a different direction. Agnew said he wants to be a GM, but Minnesota kept moving through candidates as it searches for a new leader.

Ray Agnew and the Vikings

Agnew took the meeting knowing Minnesota was looking for someone to fill a leadership role at the top of its football operation. Mark Wilf said the job called for more than one skill set, noting that football expertise, football personnel, the entire staff and team, and getting people to work together all factor into the search.

After the interview, Agnew made clear he still wants the opportunity to run a team. “I took the opportunity and I was very grateful for the opportunity,” he said. “But I have to say I’m very satisfied and happy here. I love working with the group we have here. But do I want to be a GM? Yes I do, but I’m excited about being here.”

Detroit’s Agnew in the mix

Agnew’s path has been steady. He served as the director of pro personnel for the Los Angeles Rams from 2017-2020 before joining the Lions in 2021 with Brad Holmes. Since then, he has stayed in Detroit while drawing outside interest for a top job.

He also addressed the result of the interview directly. “Obviously I didn’t have what they were looking for,” he said. “I’m very satisfied and happy in my job here.”

The Vikings were still working through a group of candidates that included Rob Brzezinski, Reed Burckhardt, Terrance Gray, John McKay, and Nolan Teasley, the Seahawks assistant general manager. That kept the search broad while Detroit retained Agnew, who said, “Was excited about the opportunity, and do I want to be a GM? Yes, I do. I’m excited about the opportunity, but I’m excited about being here also.”

Mark Wilf’s search criteria

Wilf framed the opening as a leadership hire, not just a personnel move. “This is a leadership position and someone needs to lead our football organization and that’s kind of how we’re viewing it,” he said, adding that there is no scientific formula but confidence that more time with the candidates will make the fit clearer. For Minnesota, that means the search kept going after Agnew’s interview, with Nolan Teasley still in the mix and the Vikings still trying to settle on the right final choice.
