James Lowe Set to Leave Leinster at Season's End

james lowe is set to leave Leinster at the end of the season, ending a spell that had left him on course to remain part of Irish rugby. The 33-year-old wing now appears likely to move on after contract talks broke down.

Leinster and Ireland

That change carries a direct Ireland consequence: if he leaves Irish rugby, Lowe is set to be ruled out of contention for the 2027 World Cup. He described that tournament as “the north star” and “something you really want to get to” last November, which makes the timing of this split especially sharp.

Andy Farrell said just over two months ago that he expected Lowe to sign a new contract and stay in Irish rugby. Instead, he has now been offered significantly reduced terms by Leinster, and the two sides have not reached agreement.

Contract Talks

Lowe has attracted interest from England, France and Japan. He had been extremely disappointed about the process that led to his departure and about the offer for a one-year extension, while there had still been some hope that further discussions could produce a late deal.

His position is unusual because he has never been on an IRFU national contract and has stayed on a Leinster provincial contract throughout. The IRFU may have been willing to contribute to the latest offer through a PONI top-up, but that contribution was lower than before, which meant Leinster would have had to foot nearly all of the bill if Lowe had been retained on similar terms to his last deal.

World Cup Stakes

Lowe has always spoken proudly about playing for Leinster, and he and his young family had planned to stay in Ireland after his retirement. He has also been managed carefully in recent seasons, and this campaign has brought only seven appearances for Leinster.

That leaves his future tied to one question for Ireland: whether his time in Irish rugby is now at an end. If he does move abroad, the path to 2027 closes with it.
